‘As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphas sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ So he arose and followed Him.’ Mark 2:14
Jesus saw Matthew (Levi) for who He could be and not who He was. Since He was God in the flesh, He knew Matthew better than anyone. Perhaps Matthew was pondering over what he did for a living, how that didn’t satisfy him, or how there had to be something more to life. Jesus had the answer and even though Matthew was a despised tax collector, Jesus didn’t see Matthew as the others who had to pay him the excess tax did. No, He saw more for Matthew. He saw him for who Matthew was going to be. He saw the Matthew who was going to be transformed by the power of Jesus and end up making an incredible impact on generations to follow. I am glad Jesus sees us for our more, the who we could be, and that He didn’t just pass us by because we didn’t look like a perfect, godly person. No, instead He pours out His grace and calls us to Follow Him. To leave what is behind and grasp all of what He has for us. Are you still following Him, or has this world gotten in the way of letting Jesus lead the way to all He sees in you? Take a moment and ask Jesus to help you fulfill all that He has planned for you. Then do what Matthew did, get up and follow Him.
